WHY TITHE?

For those not familiar with giving also known as tithing, it is the practice of giving a tenth of your income to your church, mission, or to charity.

The Easy Answer from Rev. Rick Warren

The easy answer to “Why tithe?” is because it works and God tells us to do this in His word in Malachi 3:10, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Giving 10% of your income is a huge leap of faith for anyone.

How Do You Start Tithing?

Could you start tithing a full 10% of your income immediately? For many families, that’s not so easy. However, we suggest establishing a timeline of how and when you will be able to fully tithe.  The most fundamental way to achieve this is in budgeting.  Create an economical plan that distributes a certain amount of your income to certain things and stick to it. There are rewards and promises in tithing. God will bless your finances, when put Him first in your finances. This is called the spiritual discipline of tithing.

The Spiritual Discipline of Tithing: Gratitude

God is specific about this habit of giving the first part of your income back to him. Obviously, God does not need your money. So why does He even say anything about tithing? Because He wants what it represents: your commitment.

God is testing your faith. He is testing your priorities. He is testing your gratitude. When you give your tithe to God, it is:

  • Gratitude for the past, “God, I wouldn’t have anything if it weren’t for you.”
  • Prioritization in the present, “God, I want you first in my life.”
  • A statement of faith in the future, “God, I believe that you’re going to keep your promises.”

Tithing is a test of your trust. Do you trust God enough with your money to say the statements above to him? God tests us because he wants us to become more like Him. He is the greatest giver, and when we show that we are trustworthy with our finances, we become more like the Great Giver. When you give to a cause that you believe in, whether it be it a charity or a church, it shows your commitment to God.

The Spiritual Discipline of Tithing: Priority

There is a lot of truth to the phrase,” Put your money where your mouth is.” The profound question you should ask yourself is: What has priority in our lives? Is Christ truly first – or is our own wants and desires first? The matter of your giving is between you and God, and He always takes into account your situation.

The Spiritual Discipline of Tithing: Statement of Faith

The important thing is that you see tithing as a privilege and not a burden. It should not be out of a sense of duty, but rather out of love for the LORD and a desire to see His kingdom advanced on Earth. TITHING is a small portion of His commandments, but it is vital to the building of His kingdom in the last days. Ask Him to guide you.

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”

– Luke 6:38 (KJV)
